Kenya Tackles BCG Vaccine Shortage: Government Outlines Recovery Plan

Kenya is facing a significant shortage of the Bacillus Calmette - Guérin (BCG) vaccine, crucial for protecting newborns against tuberculosis. With over three weeks of limited supply, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that efforts are underway to procure 2.34 million doses by the end of January.

Redistribution from low-use facilities to high-demand areas is ongoing to bridge the gap

Dr. Ahmed Wanjala, Health Cabinet Secretary

The shortage of BCG highlights challenges in vaccine supply chains globally, but it’s not all grim news. Kenya recently received:

  1. 1 million doses of Rotavirus vaccine to prevent diarrhea in children.

  2. 600,000 doses of HPV vaccine to reduce cervical cancer risk.

  3. 240,000 doses of malaria vaccine to fight one of Africa’s deadliest diseases.

Immunizations save lives, prevent illness, and shape healthier generations

The Ministry is rolling out several measures:

  • Expedited procurement to restock BCG vaccines.

  • Recording missed vaccinations for catch-up campaigns.

  • Monitoring ARV supply chains to ensure consistent HIV treatment.

Health is a collective effort. Be part of the solution by:

  • Advocating for better health policies.

  • Supporting community vaccination awareness.

  • Staying informed about Kenya’s healthcare initiatives.
