Less Steps for Water Run 2025: A Step Closer to Clean Water in Salgaa

On March 22, 2025, in honor of World Water Day, World Vision Kenya (WVK) successfully hosted the “Less Steps for Water Run” at its National Office in Karen, Nairobi. The event wasn’t just about running—it was a powerful statement against water scarcity in Salgaa, Nakuru County, where children walk up to six kilometers daily in search of clean water. This burden affects their health, education, and overall well-being, exposing them to diseases like cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, and typhoid.
The funds raised from today’s event will help extend clean water access to six additional schools, ensuring that even more children in Salgaa no longer have to walk long distances in search of water.
Event Highlights
The 6KM walk/run was symbolic, allowing participants to experience the daily struggle of children in Salgaa. But beyond the run, the day was filled with community engagement and fundraising efforts:
✔ Community Engagement: Attendees enjoyed live music, food stalls, and games, fostering a sense of unity and purpose.
✔ Fundraising for Impact: Registrations and the sale of "Inuka Angaza" merchandise helped raise funds to expand clean water access.
The impact of these efforts is already tangible, thanks to strategic partnerships with Nakuru County, KenGen, corporate partners, and well-wishers.
Together, we have taken fewer steps for water, so the children of Salgaa can too.
Impact and Significance
Since June 2021, World Vision Kenya, through the Inuka Angaza Fund, has worked to reduce water scarcity in Salgaa. The progress has been remarkable, with key milestones such as:
🔹 695 children at Mimwaita and Gicheha Primary Schools now have clean water, enabling them to focus on learning.
🔹 Two 30,000-litre rainwater harvesting tanks installed for reliable water supply.
🔹 The Umoja Water Project now provides 2,079 people with safe drinking water within a 30-minute round trip, reducing reliance on unsafe sources.
Beyond schools, clean water access has expanded to homes and early childhood centers, with:
✔ An 8KM pipeline distribution network funded by Nakuru County.
✔ A modern automated water kiosk at the borehole site.
✔ Kayanet Primary School and Umoja ECD now benefiting 390 children.
These initiatives have significantly improved hygiene, health, and learning conditions, enabling children to focus on their education in a safer environment. The success of the Less Steps for Water Run is not just about fundraising—it is about changing lives.
Corporate Commitment
Businesses played a key role in today’s event, with KKCO East Africa LLP standing out for its strong commitment to corporate social responsibility. Their participation demonstrated how companies can extend their impact beyond their industry to address pressing social challenges.
The success of this event is a testament to the power of collective action. By joining forces whether as individuals, community members, or corporate entities we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Looking Ahead
WVK is not stopping here. As part of its long-term vision, it is now spearheading the construction of a Community Resource Centre at Belbur Primary School. This space will feature:
✔ Computers and a library to promote digital literacy.
✔ Life skills training, mentorship, and counseling for adolescents, youth, and women.
The Less Steps for Water Run 2025 is a collective step toward a future where every child in Salgaa has access to clean water, a healthier life, and a better education.
