Somalia Embassy Condemns Flag Incident, Reaffirms Kenya–Somalia Friendship

The Somalia Embassy in Nairobi has firmly condemned and distanced itself from the actions of individuals who were filmed stepping on the Kenyan flag during last week’s CAF Champions League clash between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City Club.

In a press conference attended by embassy officials and the Somali Football Federation representatives, Somalia’s diplomats sought to set the record straight: the incident was unacceptable, it does not represent Somalia, and ties with Kenya remain strong.

Embassy: “This Does Not Reflect Somali Values”

Welcoming Mogadishu City Club to the embassy, officials praised the team’s presence in Nairobi as a sign of Somali sporting ambition and youth inspiration. But they immediately addressed the controversy that has trended across social media.

“We regret and firmly condemn the action of few individuals whose behavior overshadowed the remarkable performances of our two teams. Such incidents do not reflect the values of respect, friendship, and shared sovereignty that guide relations between our two brotherly nations, Kenya and Somalia,” the embassy stated.

It was emphasized that Kenya and Somalia’s partnership is today at one of its strongest points, anchored in trade, education, investment, cultural exchange, security, and sport. They praised Kenya’s role in supporting Somalia’s progress and regional integration.

Praise for Kenyan Institutions

The embassy took time to commend the Kenya Police Service, the Kenya Police Football Club administration, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and Sports Kenya for their professionalism in managing the match venue and ensuring the safety of players and fans.

“We remain in close communication with Kenyan authorities to ensure both teams and their supporters feel safe, respected, and supported as this tournament continues,” officials noted.

Looking ahead to the second leg of the CAF Champions League match this Sunday, the embassy appealed to all communities to uphold peace and mutual respect.

Head Coach: “We Apologize to the People of Kenya”

The head coach of Mogadishu City Club, identifying himself as both Somali and Kenyan, delivered the strongest words of apology.

“I want to strongly condemn the unfortunate incident during our match against Kenya Police FC, where a few individuals disrespected the Kenyan flag. Their actions do not in any way represent our club, our players, or our fans. On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we sincerely apologize to the government and people of Kenya,” he said.

The coach added that football is about unity, respect, and friendship, and the club fully supports any action taken against those responsible. He also acknowledged the “incredible turnout and passion” from fans, which gave life to the sport and demonstrated the true spirit of football.

Call for Peace Ahead of Second Leg

Both the embassy and the coach made a collective appeal to fans ahead of this weekend’s second-leg fixture.

“Football is more than a game. It is a bridge of friendship, a unifier of people, and a reflection of African unity and sportsmanship. Let us work collectively to preserve the true spirit of the beautiful game,” the embassy urged.

They assured supporters that security at the match is guaranteed and encouraged Kenyans and Somalis alike to attend in large numbers to celebrate the spirit of football.
