The Road to Addis: East Africa’s Electric Mobility Revolution

East Africa marked a leap towards sustainable transport today with the launch of the Road to Addis initiative at Ridge Cabin Resort in Tigoni. This event signals the start of a bold new chapter, as a 1,600-kilometer fully electric convoy prepares to travel from Nairobi to Addis Ababa, demonstrating the region’s commitment to clean, modern mobility.

“This is the start of a movement,” said Lisa Amenya, Chief Convenor of Africa E-Mobility Week, during the launch press conference. “The Road to Addis demonstrates that with collaboration and vision, East Africa can accelerate the shift to clean mobility and unlock opportunities for trade, jobs, and climate resilience.”

Convoy With a Mission

The convoy, made up of electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy-duty trucks, runs solely on clean energy and is designed to showcase the real potential of e-mobility for passengers and freight along East Africa’s main trade route.

The journey traces a route from Nairobi, passing through Moyale at the Kenya - Ethiopia border, onward to Yabello, Hawassa, Ziway, and Adama, before finishing in Addis Ababa on October 11. En route, the team will engage with schools and community leaders, gathering stories of how electrification is changing lives.

Partnerships: Powering the Future

A coalition of innovators and institutions is making Road to Addis possible.

Munja Group provides the energy backbone.
Kenya Power delivers charging infrastructure, with Ethiopia Electric Utility supporting power for charging on the Ethiopian side.
Kabisa is leading with freight-ready heavy-duty electric vehicles, while Spiro highlights the promise of two-wheeler electrification for daily commutes.
Government support comes from Kenya’s Ministry of Roads and Transport and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics, ensuring policies and logistics are aligned for smooth cross-border passage.

Flag-Off and Destination

The official flag-off is set for Sunday, October 5 at 11 AM at Uhuru Park in Nairobi. The convoy then sets out for its 1,600-kilometer trek, ending in Addis Ababa on October 11 with a parade of 30 electric vehicles and a press conference at the Hyatt Addis Ababa at 2:30 PM.

The journey ties directly into Africa E-Mobility Week 2025, scheduled for October 14–16 in Addis Ababa. Here, more than 500 participants in person and 1,000 virtually will chart Africa’s next steps in clean mobility.

The Big Picture

Road to Addis is more than a demonstration; it is a turning point for East Africa. The initiative brings together technology, policy, and partnership, linking climate action to economic and social progress.

For the region, electric mobility promises cleaner air, lower emissions, reduced fuel import costs, and growth in green jobs. By embarking on this journey, East Africa proves its readiness to electrify transport corridors and set a model for the continent’s future.
