Speaking to media representatives, Managing Director Peter Murungi addressed concerns surrounding Shell V-Power's octane rating and quality assurance processes.
Product quality is an area we cannot compromise. From the moment the fuel is loaded at the source, we conduct rigorous quality checks at every stage—from Mombasa port to our service stations nationwide. If a batch does not meet the required specifications, we do not distribute it. That is our commitment to our customers.
How Shell V-Power Meets the RON 95 Standard
Shell V-Power, a high-performance fuel developed globally in collaboration with Ferrari, boasts a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. Murungi emphasized that the quality control measures in place ensure every batch of Shell V-Power meets or exceeds this standard.
Multi-Layered Testing Process:
Port of Entry (Mombasa):
Fuel is tested in ISO-certified and regulatory-approved laboratories before unloading.
If the fuel falls below 95 RON, the entire shipment is rejected.
Storage & Transportation:
Dedicated tanks store Shell V-Power separately to prevent contamination.
Fuel is tested again before being transported to service stations.
At the Service Station:
Every station performs density, color, and water contamination tests before dispensing fuel.
A mobile lab team led by a technical expert, Langat, collects random fuel samples across Kenya to verify compliance.
If a single test result raises any doubt, we conduct further analysis using our advanced laboratory facilities in Nairobi and Mombasa. As the Managing Director, I personally review and sign off on these reports.

Addressing Consumer Concerns on Fuel Quality
The briefing also addressed recent claims questioning Shell V-Power's octane rating. A viral video allegedly showed a lower-than-expected RON value, but Murungi dismissed the methodology used in the video as scientifically flawed.
The device used in the viral video is not a recognized octane testing machine. Standard RON testing requires highly specialized infrared and distillation-based equipment, which is only available in accredited Laboratories.
To reassure customers, independent tests conducted at Intertek Laboratories confirmed that Shell V-Power in Kenya maintains a RON of 95.9 - 96.0, exceeding the required minimum.
Customer Commitment and Complaint Resolution
Vivo Energy Kenya prioritizes customer satisfaction and has a strict 24-hour resolution policy for any fuel-related complaints.
Every complaint reaches my desk, and we take immediate action. If necessary, we conduct on-site fuel tests and offer solutions to affected customers
Additionally, all 320 Shell service stations in Kenya were instructed to engage directly with customers, educating them on Shell V-Power’s benefits and the company’s stringent quality control measures.
